My decision to become a personal trainer comes as a result of a lifelong passion with athletics and fitness. I began as many children do, with physical activity as a form of expression and play. I continued along this path to compete in athletics during my adolescence. I excelled at baseball, football, and track. I received numerous awards in these sports and had scholarship offers for football. An injury ended my aspirations as a collegiate athlete, but I continued to work out and stay fit as a matter of habit and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
After graduation from college, I experienced what many people experience. The demands of work and my personal life left little free time in my schedule to workout. As a result, I found myself gaining weight and suffering health problems. These problems persisted until I realized that the only long-term solution was to take my health as seriously as any other aspect of my life. After all, what does a good career or relationship mean if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy it? It was with this realization that I began the road back to health and fitness, but it was only the beginning.
Upon deciding to regain my health, I quickly realized that getting real results in the limited time I could spend in the gym would depend on how much I would be willing to educate myself on the subjects of exercise and nutrition. I also realized the power of goal setting as a way to measure results and maintain focus.
I truly believe that the proper use of goal setting is the most important key to achieving the body of your dreams. Notice that I use the caveat “proper goal setting.” Many times, we are in such a rush to get to the end result that we set unrealistic goals and find ourselves disappointed and demoralized when we fall short. Proper goal setting takes place when we take account of our current knowledge and circumstances and create a concrete plan through which we can accomplish our objectives. This creates a realistic timeline and smaller, more manageable goals that act as guideposts to our long-term success. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds at a time, I’ve found it helpful to have
a short term goal of two pounds per week. Even within my weekly goals, I’ve used daily goals that focused on simply eating healthy for the day and not missing my workout. These are the small things that end up having the largest impact on a person’s ability to achieve and maintain his/her desired fitness level.
A good personal trainer will understand that his/her main job is to help identify, map, and achieve their clients’ goals. A personal trainer should possess the attributes of experience, enthusiasm, commitment, and knowledge. Without first-hand experience in fitness, there is no deep knowledge of what is necessary to become fit and healthy. Who would take advice from someone more out of shape than themselves? Does it matter how much theory a person reads if it hasn’t been tested by direct experience? As a trainer I bring a wealth of experience that informs my method of achieving results. I know what works. I have taken the time to experiment with various techniques for achieving weight loss, strength, and athletic performance. I can save clients time and frustration by charting a course to their goals that I’ve used in my own journey.
While a trainer’s experience is extremely important, the overall quality of service will be affected by the enthusiasm of the trainer. Working out should be fun! If a person finds no pleasure or satisfaction in working out, he/she probably won’t do so for long. A good workout regime should be challenging but also something that we enjoy and get satisfaction from."
